Handling synonymity in mediaeval translations of the Psalter into English

Streszczenie: The paper deals with translation strategies employed by medieval translators of the Psalter, with particular reference to handling synonymity. Because medieval translation theory advocated the strictest literalism with respect to biblical translation, renditions of scriptural material tended to be extremely literal. Very often one Latin lemma had a stable English equivalent, which, however, did not exclude the possibility of one English item being used as an equivalent of two Latin lemmata. In this context it is interesting to investigate the strategies that were employed by medieval translators for handling synonymity. Of particular interest are those cases in which the two Latin lemmata that tended to be translated by the same English item were found in neighboring passages. The paper focuses on this aspect of lexical selection with reference to verbs and covers all English medieval prose translations of the Psalter, i.e. the Old English Psalter rendition, Richard Rolle’s Psalter, The Middle English Glossed Prose Psalter, and two Wycliffite Versions. Additionally, one post-medieval translation is covered here, i.e. the Psalter of the Douay-Rheims Bible, printed in 1610. The data presented in the paper show a conflict of principles between the stability of Latin-English equivalent selection and replicating the Latin source accurately with respect to style. Note that giving priority to the former principle would have resulted in having the English passage contain a repetition while none was present in the Latin source. On the other hand, prioritizing the style would require adjusting the lexical choices to the context in violation of the practice of stable equivalence. The conflicts are resolved in different ways by different translators, thus indicating their different levels of sensitivity to repetition. The paper shows that this line of research in medieval biblical translation is well worth pursuing.
