A scientific profile

Dr. habil. Tomasz Rokosz – a cultural researcher, ethnomusicologist, Polish philologist, musician. The Head of the Department of Ethnomusicology and Hymnology (Institute of Arts Studies in the Faculty of Humanities, The John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin). He habilitated in 2017 (January) at the Faculty of Philology at the University of Silesia in Katowice (field of science: humanities, discipline: cultural studies). He received his PhD in 2005 at Maria-Curie Skłodowska University (under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Habil. Jerzy Bartmiński). Completed Postgraduate Ethnomusicological Studies at Warsaw University, also a scholar at the Centre for Studies on the Classical Tradition, Faculty of ‘Artes Liberales’ at Warsaw University. He is a member of the Polish Ethnological Society and IOV (International Organization of Folk Art). He is the author of several scholarly monographs: Między mową a śpiewem. Słowo, muzyka i obrzęd w kontekście przemian (Between Speech and Singing. Word, Music and Rite in the Transformations Context) (2019); Obrzęd sobótkowy. Tradycja i jej transformacje – studium etnokulturowe (The Midsummer Night’s ritual. The Tradition and its Transformations – an ethnocultural study) (2016); Od folkloru do folku. Metamorfozy pieśni tradycyjnych we współczesnej kulturze (From Folklore to Folk. Metamorphosis of Traditional Songs in the Contemporary Culture) (2009); he is also the editor of a few books: Studium harmonii polskiej. Materiały źródłowe (The Study of the Polish Squeezebox (a traditional accordion). Source Materials) (2007); Konfrontacja i dialog w tekstach kultury polskiej (Confrontation and Dialogue in Texts of Polish Culture) (2011); Pieśń i piosenka. Gatunek – tekst – muzyka (Chanson and Song. Genre – Text – Music) (2015); Panslawizm – wczoraj, dziś, jutro (Pan-Slavism – Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow) (2016) as well as the author of several dozen articles and reviews. He also published his articles in the journals such as “Edukacja Muzyczna” (“Music Education”), “Journal of Urban Ethnology”, ”Literatura Ludowa” (“Folk Literature”), “Czas Kultury” (“Time of Culture”), “Akcent” (“Accent”), “Kresy” (“Borderlands”), “Twórczość Ludowa” (“Folk Creativity”), “Obyczaje” (“Customs”), among others, and in many other collective works. He successfully carried out international and national scholar grants, was also actively involved in ethnomusicological, culture studies and ethnolinguistic field research in Poland and abroad. Often a member of the jury in different national and regional singing competitions as well as national and regional folklore competitions. He is also known as a composer of songs and monodramas as well as he took part in many concerts and performances in Poland and abroad. He received many awards both for his scholar and artistic achievements, such as “Maria Curie” Scientific Award obtained in 2011 for his input in the collective work Lubelskie, vol. 4, edited by Jerzy Bartmiński (in the Polish Song and Folk Music series, edited by Ludwik Bielawski); Folk Phonogram of the Year 2000 (for the album Just Playing (Się Gra), recorded in the Agnieszka Osiecka Studio in Warsaw.
