Streszczenie: The study’s main objective was to investigate whether the subjectively successful cognitive mastery of artwork enhances contemporary art appreciation among primary school students. Evidence that the meaning-making process is crucial for the reception of contemporary art has only been shown among adults, and it is uncertain whether it generalizes beyond adult viewers. In this study, we aimed to fill this gap by testing participants aged 6–14 years (N = 197). They viewed two categories of contemporary art: representational or nonrepresentational artworks, under two conditions: providing (or not) contextual information about the artwork. They rated their subjective understanding and liking. As we predicted, subjective understanding mediated the effect of age on artwork liking, and this mediation effect was influenced by whether contextual information was provided. Hence, subjective understanding seems essential for contemporary art appreciation among adults (as shown in many previous studies) and younger audiences. Besides, in line with our hypotheses, both liking and understanding of contemporary artworks decreased in older students, particularly within the more cognitively challenging nonrepresentational artworks category (the hypothesis was supported for liking) and highly challenging context when no information about artwork was provided (which was supported for the dependent variable of understanding). This pattern of findings suggests that primary school students are more critical of contemporary art as they age due to the increasing need to engage in the cognitive mastering of art and meaning-making of it subjectively satisfyingly.
