Streszczenie: Cultural elements anchored in lexical units are an inherent feature of linguistic conceptualizations or they constitute a non-linguistic reality expressed in language. The aim of the paper is to demonstrate that the selection of strategies and techniques for translating culturally marked lexical units (culturemes) depends on the ability to decode them in the source text, i.e. on the ability to notice and properly identify the source of their cultural motivation. The analysis of examples taken from the corpus of translations of journalistic texts and the subsequent survey devoted to the recognition of culturemes in French and Polish indicate that the difficulty is in the ability (or lack of thereof) of the translator to recognize that a particural linguistic unit represents a cultureme, which triggers reflection on the ways of developing cross-cultural competence in future translators.
