Streszczenie: . 1. Generational shift in sources of knowledge about John Paul II The older cohort (29-35 years) draws knowledge mainly from the Church and family. The younger cohort, Polish university students aged 19-28, relies primarily on media and peers, which fosters more critical interpretations. 2. Declining effectiveness of media and religious education Among students (19-28), knowledge about JP2 from media and catechesis is negatively associated with the perceived impact on faith. Institutional transmission is seen as outdated and poorly aligned with young people’s real-life concerns. 3. Loss of “innovator” function in religious communication In terms of diffusion of innovations theory (Rogers), JP2 was an “innovation” in religious leadership in the 1980s and 1990s. The absence of “reinvention” has significantly weakened his role among the younger cohort. 4. “Frozen” in the institutional narrative The lack of adaptation in language and communication forms to contemporary debates means that JP2 functions as a historical figure rather than an inspiring authority. 5. Social filtering and critical narratives Among students (19-28), content about JP2 undergoes strong “filtering” through social media and peer discussions, amplifying critical perspectives. This group shows greater polarization in assessments of his pontificate. 6. A symbol of an institution in crisis For part of the younger cohort, JP2 is now less a person than a symbol of the Catholic Church, assessed through the lens of institutional crises, such as sexual abuse scandals. 7. Theoretical contribution of the study Applying diffusion of innovations theory to the reception of JP2 shows that his message lost its innovative character due to the lack of adaptation. The findings highlight the importance of “reinventing” religious communication to sustain authority in a context of pluralization and digitalized communication.
